Spring House is a pioneer of the place and train-approach in Finland
Since 2020, Spring House has been piloting and developing the Place and Train approach, also known as IPS (Individual Placement and Support), for different client groups. Through these pilots, the company has adapted the IPS model to the fields of work ability and accident rehabilitation, providing new, individualized ways to support people with partial work ability in returning to work.
The IPS model was originally designed for people recovering from mental health challenges. Spring House has developed and adapted the model together with, among others, the pension insurance company Varma, for clients in work ability rehabilitation. The target groups have included both mental health rehabilitation clients and over 55-year-old clients participating in vocational rehabilitation. Spring House has also tested the IPS model as a support method for people with chronic pain returning to work.
Encouraging pilot results
In the pilot completed in spring 2024 with Varma, 64% of participants found employment during the IPS coaching period, compared to 45% in the control group. These results suggest that the adapted IPS model has effectively supported the employment of work ability rehabilitation clients and strengthened their connection to working life.
The IPS model, originally developed in the United States, is based on research and strong international evidence. Studies have shown promising results not only for mental health rehabilitation clients but also among other groups, such as young people and immigrants.a.
Moving forward with new solutions
Spring House has gathered the results and insights from its work ability rehabilitation pilots and other employment service projects based on the IPS model (implemented since 2022). Drawing on these experiences and identified best practices, we have succeeded in creating effective and innovative employment services, even for clients in challenging starting situations.
Clients may need, in addition to employment services, other types of support to make sustainable employment possible. In the new Place and Train approach, close cooperation across the client’s service network plays a key role in achieving successful employment outcomes.
Solutions for employers
The model is also suitable for employers looking for new ways to support employees returning to work after a long absence. Work adaptation and on-the-job coaching help create sustainable solutions. The IPS-style Place and Train approach requires specialized coaching expertise, and Spring House is a recognized pioneer in this field in Finland. Our coaching team is skilled, committed, and passionate about their work.Opens in a new tab
